Handle after-hours calls without living on your phone
You can catch evening and weekend calls without answering the phone at dinner. Here's how to set boundaries and still win the jobs.
Decide what 'urgent' means for you
Not every 9 PM call is an emergency, and not every emergency can wait. Write down, in advance, what you'll drop everything for (a burst pipe, no heat in winter, a lockout) versus what waits until morning (a quote, a routine booking). Now you're deciding on purpose, not in the moment.
Set it up
- Record a separate after-hours greeting that says when you'll respond and how to flag a true emergency.
- Use a text auto-reply for evenings: 'Got your message — we'll call first thing in the morning. If it's an emergency, reply URGENT.'
- Batch your callbacks: one block in the morning and one after lunch beats being interrupted all day.
- Protect your evenings on purpose — a rested owner does better work and closes more the next day.
Where automation helps
The hard part of after-hours is that emergencies and routine calls arrive on the same line, and you can't always tell which is which without answering. An AI receptionist can take the call, sort the urgent from the routine, and only ping you for the ones that matter — so you're not glued to your phone but you never miss the burst-pipe call either.
